Fire prevention is a subject that
should interest all boat owners and
operators. Of course, prevention
efforts can and do fail, so it’s also
important to be well versed in the
subject of fire suppression.
An important part of fire
suppression is making certain you
have the proper number of fire
extinguishers aboard. (For the most
conservative approach, follow the
fire extinguisher recommendations
set forth by the ABYC.) If you’re
looking for the ultimate in fire
protection, you may want to install
a fixed fire extinguishing system.
The drawback to these systems,
however, is that they can be costly
and time consuming to install.

an alternative called Fire Foe. Fire
Foe is a self-contained, one-time-use
tubular fire suppression system
that uses a clean, noncorrosive
extinguishing agent called Envirogel,
designed to absorb heat and then
chemically extinguish the fire.
The compact, easy-to-install tube
is designed to breach when its
temperature reaches 175°F (as
with other fixed fire extinguishing
systems) and to emit the Envirogel.
All units include a pressure
monitoring gauge and switch;
the latter can be used for a
dashboard status indicator light.
