STEVE AND LINDA DASHEW
have written eight books about
the sea, and more than 300 of
their articles have appeared in
magazines around the world.
Steve’s Deerfoot and Sundeer
Series sailing yachts are considered the standard for
long-distance cruisers. His latest design, the 83-foot
Wind Horse, has broken new ground in the world of
passagemaking powerboats. The Dashews’ books are
available at setsail.com.
JOHN HOLUM, a reformed sailor
who now holds a 50-ton master’s
license, has been cruising full time
with his wife, Barbara, since 2004.
Their 58-foot Solveig IV (“Way
of the Sun” in Norwegian) is
named after John’s mother and is their second Krogen.
Committed snowbirds, the Holums spend their winters
in Marathon, Florida, where John plays the banjo in
tiki bars. They cruise north to Maine and Nova Scotia
in the summer and visit Chesapeake Bay in the spring
and fall, following what they call the “Goldilocks
porridge principle—never too hot, never too cold.”
Before retiring in 2003, John was a practicing
attorney and government official, serving as director
of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency
and then as undersecretary of state for arms
control and international security affairs. He
finished his career as a cargo airline executive.
DICK WEBSTER and his wife,
Joan, have cruised the Great
Lakes for more than 35 years.
Natives of western Michigan,
the Websters are now residents
of Longboat Key, Florida.
During the summer season, they enjoy exploring
Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior.
Retired since 1987, Dick and his family owned and
operated hotels and restaurants in the Midwest. Joan
is an elected politician on Longboat Key, and Dick
is a past commodore of Michigan’s Macatawa
Bay Yacht Club, where he participated in offshore
sailboat racing for 15 years while Joan chaired sail
race committees. The couple’s first three yachts
were sailboats, but in 1999 they made the transition
to powerboating with the purchase of a Grand Banks
42 Classic, Tequila.
