Put the throttles down, experience finger-tip control and
the instantaneous and predictable response to the wheel
in waves…carry on a normal conversation at decibel levels
under 80 and stay dry, even in the aft cockpit seat. The
40z is so much fun to drive, you’ll wonder why you ever
considered anything but this timeless Doug Zurn design.
40z’s 1. 3 nmpg at 30+ knots is about the same fuel
efficiency that a Grand Banks 41 trawler gets doing 9
knots. Slow down the 40z to trawler speeds, and mileage
nearly triples to 3. 8 nmpg with a range of 1200 miles.
Docking a 40z using Volvo-Penta’s IPS joystick is easier
than a 29-footer. One can even hover in place to get
fenders and docklines out with Volvo’s smooth, quiet DPS
dynamic positioning system.
The 40z is unique. Guests and crew feel welcomed
as they “stroll aboard” thru side-opening doors at
floating dock height. For summer porch fresh-air
comfort, windshields fully open (see above) and
StrataGlass side curtains roll up in place. 14 people can
easily be seated to converse on a single level deck from
transom to wheel. In inclement weather, there’s seating
for 8 in an air-conditioned pilothouse.
Belowdecks it’s bright, cheery and spacious with a
large galley, dinette with harbor viewing ports, plus 14 other
opening ports and hatches. “The perfect cruising boat for
two” has a large island berth and a truly separate shower.
Yet, sleeps 6 total with convertible dinette and bridgedeck
settees.
Time a factor? A low profile, 12’ beam and lack of
brightwork on deck save and hours. Net, net: better
access to slips, easy trucking between seasonal ports, less
bridge-waiting time and only 5 minutes for a washdown.
