BEND TO THE NORTH
I'm sorry to bring this up so long
after the fact, but I was reading the
specifications of Teal (“Sister Act”
PMM Oct. ’ 10) when I noticed
mention of the Kruse and Banks
Shipbuilding yard in Bend, Oregon.
Bend is located in the near middle
of the state, nowhere near any
navigable water for a ship of any
size. However, North Bend, Oregon,
is located near Coos Bay, on the
Coos Bay Estuary, quite suitable for
ship launching.
Being an old Oregonian I couldn't
wrap my head around the problem
of getting a boat the size of Teal
launched in Bend on the Deschutes
River, given the rapids and all. A
quick turn to Wikipedia cleared
the fog!

CDM AND STERNDRIVES
Acknowledging that most PMM
readers will have inboards in their
boats, I am under the impression
that the joint venture, Cummins
MerCruiser Diesel (CDM), was
formed to supply diesel-powered
sterndrives to the market. Steve
D’Antonio’s article “A Well-Kept
Secret” (PMM March ’ 11) seems to
bypass the fact that you cannot buy a
Cummins-built engine with a
sterndrive. I am in the market for just
such a unit. I had looked closely at
CDM's 4. 2 ES 320, made in Italy,
and at the Miami Boat Show, I saw
the new 4. 2, made in Germany. The
only Cummins-made engine I can
buy with a sterndrive is the QSB480
with the NXT race-bred drive.
After some discussion with a dealer
that sells CDM and Volvo, I am
buying a Volvo D6 370. I enjoy in-depth tech articles—I learn from the
details, so keep up the good work.

Thank you for your note and
comments, David. Regarding my
failure to mention CMD and
sterndrives, if only I had unlimited
room in each article where I could
include everything. Sadly that’s
