THE BIG POND 42
Is A Comfortable Custom Downeast Cruiser
OOK WHAT JUST BLEW IN FROM CANADA...
Here in Door County, Wisconsin—a peninsula
separating Green Bay and Lake Michigan, roughly halfway
between the equator and the North Pole—high pressure
from the north usually pushes back the warm winds of the
south. But this year, a fresh breeze has come directly from
Nova Scotia, bringing with it the Big Pond 42.
The Big Pond 42 is a fine example of a Downeast-style
yacht offering the kind of accommodations typically
found aboard a long-range cruising trawler. Built by Big
Pond Boat Shop, located on the shores of Bras d’Or Lake
on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, she is the product of
a close collaboration between her builder and her owners,
Bob and Lynn Doneff of Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.
The Doneffs’ previous boats included a number of
Carver express cruisers. Bob was interested in finding a
vessel offering accommodations suitable for longer
cruises, as well as more traditional styling. In their
careers, both he and Lynn developed and built high-end
custom homes, so they were interested in working with
a custom boatbuilder to create a yacht that would fit
their personal requirements.
