CHARTING
THE FOURTH DIMENSION
Geonav, a new electronics player in
the U.S. market, unveiled its G-series
chart plotters at the Ft. Lauderdale
International Boat Show, including its
flagship G12 multifunction display.
Geonav is an Italian company that
was founded in 1983 and acquired by
U.S.-based Johnson Outdoors in 2007.
The firm’s MFDs are the first on the
market capable of displaying the new
C-Map 4D cartography (in addition
to electronic charts from Navionics).
The G12 is preloaded with reference
charts from both C-Map and
Navionics, and highly detailed
charts are available from their
respective worldwide chart catalogs.
The fourth dimension implied
in the 4D name is time—that is,
customers may download new
revisions of the cartography
whenever, not just at prescribed
intervals, because the database is
continually updated. C-Map 4D also
includes “true-view” and “photo”
features, providing high-resolution
coastal satellite imagery overlaid onto
the most accurate and up-to-date
vector data, plus thousands of
exclusive photos of marinas and
areas of interest.
A NEW WAY TO SEE IN THE DARK
FLIR Systems acquired the marine
electronics firm Raymarine this past
spring, so the recent marriage of
FLIR’s thermal navigation cameras
to Raymarine’s E- and G-Series nav
systems is not a big surprise.
NEWS & NOTES
That means boaters with the
appropriate Raymarine gear will be
able—literally—to see in the dark.
FLIR says its new T300 and T400
thermal navigation cameras, when
added to Raymarine systems, “will
allow boaters to navigate safely and
confidently, seeing obstructions,
buoys, and other vessels in total
darkness.”
Boaters will be able to control the
T300 and T400 thermal cameras
through the Hybrid Touch user-
interface feature on E-Series
Widescreen multifunction displays.
The cameras can be controlled
directly from a G-Series system using
a remote keyboard. Connections for
the two systems essentially are “plug
and play,” FLIR said.
