“Our family’s previous sailboat gave me insight into what to look for in our next boat.”
Tokkie Elliott, owner of Nordhavn 56M/S Ata Marie
With almost a decade of cruising
experience, Tokkie Elliott knew exact-
ly what he wanted in his next boat.
Like many who aspire to own a Nordhavn, Elliott
had already logged an impressive number of pas-
sages. For about nine years he cruised with his
family extensively through Western Europe on a
55-foot Oyster. A European delivery led to cruising
the Eastern Mediterranean one summer followed
by the Western Mediterranean the next. They
crossed the Atlantic Ocean and spent many winters in the Caribbean before moving up the
Eastern Seaboard. Then they followed the Saint
Lawrence to Buffalo before moving down the
Hudson River to New York City. Next came a transit of the Panama Canal followed by stops in
California, Hawaii and British Columbia.
After a year of cruising the West Coast on his
Nordhavn 56 M/S, Elliott is able to elaborate:
“We filled up in Dana Point, went to San
Francisco and the San Joaquin River, and then
all the way down to La Paz – and then we got
fuel only because it was available and easy to
do. We spent October and November around the
islands above La Paz and then cruised up to
Guaymas – here we fueled again because it
“After selecting the right boat, I also discovered I’d selected the right company, too! The people at Nordhavn are wonderful to work with - they are friendly, happy and they get the job
done. I feel like their favorite customer. They sure treated me nicely and they have been great people to work with. I have enjoyed the process along with the people.” For more about

While impressive, incredible fuel
economy isn’t the only feature of the
Motorsailer that has Elliott excited.
“We met a lot of people who like the concept of
the Nordhavn Motorsailer. In fact, a Nordhavn
55 owner mentioned how much he liked the
light and airy feel the salon has. Our PH is part
of the salon, which is actually larger than on
other boats. Then we open the back door to-what I like to call - the porch deck, which makes
for a lot of space all on one level. You can
accommodate a lot of people if you want to.”
“When I saw the Nordhavn 56 M/S, I
thought, this is the boat.” Elliott said. “My
experience has been that you are trying to go to
windward or there is no wind – that is why I went
for the efficiency of the motorsailer. In fact, after
talking to other Nordhavn owners, I gather we
burn about half of the fuel they do to accomplish
the same task.”
was available and easy to do. Then down to
Manzanillo, around Cabo and then back to
Dana Point. In fact we still have a lot of fuel
onboard after doing the infamous Baja Bash.”
South of the border Tokkie explorers the jungles of Mexico as well
as the solitude of the Sea of Cortez (top).
After a smile Elliott adds, “The reason I chose
the Motorsailer is this: someone once said to
me the difference between a powerboat and a
sailboat is the difference between running the
engine 100 percent and running it 90 percent
of the time. On the motorsailer, however, I
found I could always get at least 50-percent of
wind speed when under sail alone. It’s fun.”
