TONY FLEMING has been
interested in boats all his life
but did not get into professional
boatbuilding until 1959, when he
joined American Marine in Hong
Kong. At that time the company
was building all sizes and types of custom boats,
switching several years later to production of the first
Grand Banks. In 1985 Tony moved to Taiwan and
began building a line of yachts bearing his name. Since
then, the Fleming range has been extended to include the
65 and 75. Each of the 247 boats carrying the Fleming
name has been built at the same yard.
In 2004 Tony decided to keep hull number 1 of the
new Fleming 65 line to use as a test bed. Since her
spring 2005 commissioning, Tony has cruised Venture
more than 20,000 miles between Alaska and Nova
Scotia. Last summer he cruised from Southampton,
England, to Düsseldorf, Germany, aboard her sistership,
Venture II. Everything Tony learns along the way is fed
back to the yard for inclusion in the design of Fleming’s
production boats.
Tony is also a filmmaker, and DVDs documenting
his voyages are available from the Fleming Yachts
website, www.flemingyachts.com.

WIN JOURNALISM AWARDS
It’s not often that we toot our own horn, but a recent
announcement from Boating Writers International (BWI)
presents the perfect opportunity.
PMM Electronics Editor Peter Swanson and contributing
writer Chris Caswell took top prizes in BWI’s 17th Annual
Writing Contest, which recognizes excellence in boating, fishing,
and travel journalism.
Chris won first place in the Boat Test category for his feature
on the Out Islander 64, “Getting It Write,” which appeared in
our October 2009 issue. Peter was awarded first prize for two
articles: “Manna from Heaven” (PMM July/Aug. ’09) in the
Electronics category and “Radar Love” (PMM May/June ’09)
in the Gear, Electronics, and Product Tests category.
“We’re thrilled that Chris and Peter were recognized by juries
of their peers for their hard work and talent,” said PMM Editor-
In-Chief John Wooldridge. “Our collective efforts continue to
produce the finest magazine for cruising-under-power readers,
and these authors have played a major role in the PMM
tradition of excellence in journalism that will grow in the years
to come.”
Congratulations, Peter and Chris, from all of us at PMM.

Customer Testimonial
“While dockside and hooked to shore power our cabin
lights dimmed, then brightened every 30 minutes.
I was concerned and very discouraged by another
mysterious electrical problem and intended to return
home earlier than originally planned. Steve’s inspection of my boat’s charging system revealed a very
dangerous electrical malfunction. He suggested a
temporary solution that alleviated the danger of fire,
and allowed us to continue our cruise. After one
consultation with Steve I’m more confident and have
a much better understanding of my boat and its
complex systems.”
