Bio: Margy and Gates Richards, Cincinnati, Ohio. In
addition to boating, Margy and Gates enjoy reading,
hiking, and visiting their children and grandchildren.
Before retiring, Margy worked in children’s services, and
Gates was an attorney.
The Boat: WAVE WALKER, a 1994 Grand Banks 49 that
the Richards purchased in 2003. “We got into boating
because it was a project we could do together,” says
Margy. “Since ‘Wave Walker’ is our first boat, we had
Captain Pattie Moore of Sea Sense come along on our
first big trip and she was a huge help. We learned the
things we wanted to, and on our own boat. In 2004 we
spent 144 days aboard.”
Cruising: “We primarily cruise from the Chesapeake to
Maine and back,” Gates says. “We especially like Brown’s
Wharf and Marina in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The
Browns make everyone feel like family. But we have a lot
of favorite stops, including Mystic, New York City, and
Annapolis – the people in all these places are wonderful.”

Reason for Boatyard Stop: “This is our fourth year at ZMI;
we came for annual lay-up and maintenance and an
overview inspection, and to continue our multi-year plan
for upgrading systems to ABYC standards.”
Why Zimmerman Marine? “The crew at ZMI is very
thorough, and we are confident that they will get it right.
They are able to identify potential issues before they
become big problems, and they sometimes offer us less
expensive solutions than what we had planned on. We love
that we can call ZMI from anywhere and they will talk
us through whatever is happening; so we’re in good hands
even when we are not there.”
