Ask seasoned cruisers to list some of the
things they want more of in their next boat,
and space will be very near the top of the
chart. We all learn to adapt to the amount of
room we have for living and storage on our
existing boat. But, at the risk of sounding like
a perpetually dissatisfied customer, this is one
of those subjects that inevitably gives rise to
the maxim “More is always better.”
After 10 years of designing and building
Selene Trawlers, which range from 36 to 75
nominal feet, Howard Chen has developed a
keen appreciation for the spaces enclosed and
formed by his full-displacement trawler
yachts. In recent years, he has modified some
very popular designs to increase the available
space within and the usable deck space
without, modifications that also have brought
about better handling and performance
characteristics. Designated as “DH” versions
of earlier models, these yachts were conceived
to be much more than stretched-out
adaptations of existing designs. Rather, they
are hulls and superstructures with increased
displacement and volume, hulls that will
accommodate larger fuel tanks, provide
roomier engine compartments, offer greater
storage and comfort for long-distance cruises,
and more.
